Sydney: Thank you so much for having me, Ashley. I'm excited to be here.
Ashley: I want to jump right into: What is a Tonsil Stone?
Sydney: Absolutely. So a tonsil stone is the calcification of food, mucus, and bacteria that form in the pits of people's tonsils. And then there might even be this question of, well, What is a Tonsil?
Tonsils are a part of our lymphatic system; they're part of our immune system. When you look in the back of your throat, you may or may not have your tonsils. It depends on whether you had them taken out around the age of five. A lot of young people are actually growing up with their tonsils because they stopped doing routine tonsillectomies in the 1980s. So there’s really this interesting divide between people who have tonsils and people who don’t, and then people who get tonsil stones.
Ashley: You’ve done this before. I can tell. So Why are Tonsil Stones Problematic?
Sydney: Because they reek! They literally smell like rotting eggs. People describe them with so much hatred. It’s actually such an interesting topic and problem to be working on because, with other parts of our body, people might not like body hair or different things, but there’s a real hatred for tonsil stones that seems to be unique to this category. Honestly, that just kind of warms my heart. If there’s this much frustration with it, then it just means there’s so much we can do to help people and make their lives better by creating products to deal with this issue.
