The smell can sometimes be so intense that other people in our lives can smell the tonsil stones. Loved ones such as significant others, family and friends are around us enough to notice the distinctive breath of tonsil stones. Most often, people do not know what to call the smell or why it happens and will not mention anything.
People with tonsil stones may experience bad breath, a metallic taste in the mouth, and a persistent cough. The stones can also cause discomfort, irritation, and inflammation in the tonsils, leading to sore throat and difficulty swallowing.
Tonsil stones smell because the bacteria and fungi feed on the mucus, food, and debris that gets stuck in the tonsil pits. The anaerobic bacteria produces foul smelling sulfides giving it that distinct pungent smell. Tonsil stones are also composed of many layers of living microbes.
While anyone can develop tonsil stones, they are more common in people who have larger tonsils or deep crevices in their tonsils. Poor oral hygiene, chronic sinus problems, and dry mouth can also contribute to the formation of tonsil stones.
Tonsil stones sufferers often mention feeling worried or self conscious about someone noticing they have bad breath. Some people use mouthwash or bring gum with them but the only real solution to stop the smell is to remove the tonsil stone causing the odor.
The most effective way to get rid of the tonsil stone smell is to physically remove the tonsil stone and any other debris from the tonsil pit.
Historically, there haven't been any products designed specifically for tonsil stone removal so people had to get creative. We surveyed hundreds of tonsil stone sufferers and some of the most common things people have tried to use to remove tonsil stones were their fingers, Q-Tips, earwax removers, pimple poppers, toothbrushes, oral irrigators, etc.
We are bioengineers that get tonsil stones and we were tired of feeling embarrassed about stinky tonsil stones. We tried all of the previously mentioned removal options and noticed that they were challenging, left our throats sore, or were just simply unsafe.
We decided we wanted a better option so we used our bioengineering background to develop tools specifically for the safe and easy removal of tonsil stones. Now we're removing our tonsil stones in 30 secs instead of struggling in front of mirror for 30 mins!
